The Science Behind the Light — and the Extraordinary World Your Mind Creates With It
Close your eyes. See more.
It sounds like a contradiction.
You recline beneath a Lucia N°03. You close your eyes. There is no screen to watch, no virtual-reality headset, no colored imagery being projected in front of you.
And then something remarkable can happen.
Color appears.
Geometric patterns begin to form and dissolve. Light seems to move through enormous spaces. Tunnels, spirals, mosaics and intricate structures may emerge. Occasionally the experience becomes more dreamlike: landscapes, faces, memories, symbols or imagery that seems to appear from somewhere beyond ordinary visual awareness.
Yet the Lucia N°03 is primarily producing white light.
So where is everything else coming from?
That question takes us directly into one of the most fascinating things about the Lucia:
The light comes from outside you. The experience is created within you.
What Is the Lucia N°03?
Lucia N°03 is a hypnagogic light system developed in Austria by clinical psychologist Dr. Engelbert Winkler and neurologist Dr. Dirk Proeckl.
The system combines a warm, continuous light source with precisely controlled flickering light. Different programs vary the frequency, rhythm, duration and intensity of those light patterns, producing very different sensory experiences.
The technology was created as a way of exploring meditation, altered states of awareness and the relationship between light and human consciousness.
At Awakening, the experience is always received with the eyes closed.
That is where things become interesting.
Your Eyes Are Closed. So How Are You Seeing Anything?
Closing your eyelids does not switch off your visual system.
Light is still capable of passing through the eyelids and reaching the retina. Cells in the retina respond to that changing light and send electrical signals along the visual pathways of the brain.
Normally, your brain uses this system to interpret the external world.
A tree.
A face.
A room.
The horizon.
But during stroboscopic light stimulation there may be no external object corresponding to what you are experiencing.
Instead, rhythmic stimulation interacts with the neural systems responsible for vision.
The result can be internally generated visual phenomena: color, geometry, movement and imagery that can feel remarkably vivid.
Scientific literature commonly refers to these as flicker-induced visual phenomena or flicker-induced hallucinations. Importantly, these experiences can occur in healthy people who remain fully aware that what they are seeing is internally generated.
In simpler language:
Lucia provides the stimulus. Your brain creates the art.
The Brain Begins Responding to the Rhythm
One of the key ideas behind flickering-light technology is a phenomenon known as photic driving.
Your brain operates through rhythmic electrical activity. When the visual system is exposed to repeating pulses of light, measurable brain activity can begin responding at the frequency of the stimulation and sometimes at related harmonic frequencies.
This does not mean that the Lucia simply flips your brain from one neatly labeled "brainwave state" into another.
The human brain is considerably more complex than that.
But it does mean that rhythmic light can influence patterns of neural activity.
Studies using the Lucia N°03 have demonstrated frequency-dependent differences in both brain activity and subjective visual experience. Researchers have also found changes in communication between the thalamus—a major sensory relay within the brain—and areas involved in visual processing during flicker stimulation.
This helps explain why changing the rhythm of the light can dramatically change what someone experiences.
Why Does Frequency Matter?
Think about music.
A slow cello note creates a very different experience from rapid percussion, even though both are sound.
Light has rhythm too.
A light flashing three times per second is presenting the nervous system with something very different from light flashing ten or eighteen times per second.
Researchers studying flicker stimulation have tested this directly.
In one controlled study using the Lucia N°03, participants received constant light, 3 Hz flickering light and 10 Hz flickering light. The 10 Hz condition produced substantially stronger experiences of vivid color and geometric visual phenomena.
Another study examined 3 Hz, 8 Hz, 10 Hz and 18 Hz stimulation and found that both frequency and rhythmicity mattered. Again, rhythmic stimulation around 10 Hz produced particularly strong geometric patterns and sensations of visual movement. When the rhythm was deliberately disrupted, these effects became considerably weaker.
This gives us an important clue.
The Lucia experience isn't simply the result of "bright flashing lights."
The timing of the light matters.
But Where Do All Those Colors Come From?
This is perhaps the most delightful part.
The Lucia does not need to shine red light at you for you to experience red.
It does not need to project a blue spiral for you to see one.
The visual cortex is an extraordinarily sophisticated image-generating system. Normally, its job is so seamless that we assume we are simply "seeing reality."
But vision is actually a collaboration between information arriving through the eyes and the brain's continuous interpretation of that information.
When rhythmic stimulation alters the normal flow of visual input, patterns can emerge from the dynamics of the visual system itself.
Researchers have repeatedly observed that stroboscopic stimulation can generate recognizable classes of geometric forms—spirals, lattices, tunnels, grids, honeycombs, rotating structures and other repeating forms.
And sometimes the imagery becomes more complex.
People may encounter landscapes, objects, faces or dreamlike scenes.
Current research suggests that relatively simple geometric imagery may be closely linked to activity within the visual system itself, while more complex imagery may increasingly involve higher-level, "top-down" processes such as memory, imagination and association.
That may be one reason two people can experience the exact same Lucia program and describe entirely different journeys afterward.
What Does "Hypnagogic" Mean?
Lucia N°03 is often described as a hypnagogic light.
Hypnagogia is the threshold state between ordinary waking consciousness and sleep.
You have probably experienced it.
You're lying in bed and you aren't quite asleep, but ordinary thinking has started to loosen.
Images may appear spontaneously.
Thoughts connect in unusual ways.
Time becomes less important.
You may suddenly have an idea you weren't consciously searching for.
Then you realize:
"I was almost asleep."
Artists, meditators and philosophers have been fascinated by this threshold state for centuries.
The Lucia was designed to explore experiences that can resemble aspects of this territory while you remain awake and aware.
That distinction matters.
You don't have to fall asleep.
You don't have to "make" anything happen.
And there isn't a correct experience you are supposed to achieve.
You simply close your eyes and allow the experience to unfold.
Is the Lucia N°03 Psychedelic?
This is where language becomes interesting.
People frequently describe Lucia sessions as psychedelic-like, particularly because of the extraordinary closed-eye colors, geometry, alterations in time perception and sense of entering unusual inner spaces.
Researchers studying flickering light also use questionnaires developed for the scientific study of altered states of consciousness and psychedelic experiences.
Studies have confirmed that flicker stimulation can temporarily produce several features associated with altered states—especially vivid visual phenomena. Research has even begun examining similarities and differences between light-induced states and psychedelic states.
But there is an important distinction:
There is no psychedelic substance involved.
Nothing is ingested.
The experience emerges from an interaction between light, the visual system and your own brain.
That makes Lucia a fascinating tool for people curious about consciousness itself.
Why Can It Feel So Profound?
Science can tell us quite a bit about what is happening in the visual pathways.
It can measure frequencies.
It can measure EEG activity.
It can study connectivity between brain regions.
It can document which kinds of visual phenomena people report.
What science cannot yet fully explain is why an internally generated experience of light sometimes becomes personally meaningful.
Someone may simply enjoy an extraordinary kaleidoscope of color.
Someone else may become deeply relaxed.
Another person may experience memories or emotions.
Someone may encounter imagery that feels symbolic.
Someone else may spend the entire session experiencing what feels like an enormous field of moving light.
And occasionally someone opens their eyes afterward and simply says:
"I don't know how to explain what just happened."
We are perfectly comfortable with that.
At Awakening, we don't believe every experience needs to be interpreted.
Sometimes wonder is enough.
Why Is Every Lucia Session Different?
You are not the same person every time you arrive.
Your level of fatigue is different.
Your nervous system is different.
Your attention is different.
Your emotional state is different.
The music may be different.
And the Lucia itself offers many different programs, frequencies, rhythms and intensities.
All of those variables meet your nervous system in the moment.
That is why even repeating the same program does not necessarily recreate the same experience.
As we often say at Awakening:
The light creates the conditions.Your mind creates the experience.
Light + Sound + Vibration
At Awakening, Lucia N°03 can also become part of a larger sensory environment.
During The Awakening Experience, the Lucia is paired with curated music and the Sage Sound Lounge, allowing sound to be heard and gentle low-frequency vibration to be physically felt through the body.
That creates several simultaneous streams of sensory information:
Light you experience internally.
Music you hear.
Vibration you feel.
Research into flickering light and music is still developing, but an experimental study found that adding flicker-light stimulation significantly increased participants' reported emotional response to music, particularly measures associated with joyful activation and emotional arousal.
For us, this combination is not about overwhelming the senses.
It is about giving the analytical mind something unusual enough that, for a little while, it may stop running the show.
What Is Lucia N°03 "Doing" to You?
Perhaps the best answer is less dramatic than you might expect.
It is presenting your visual system with carefully timed patterns of light.
Your nervous system does the rest.
That interaction can produce an experience ranging from gentle shifting color to remarkably immersive visual worlds.
For some people it becomes meditation.
For some it is deep relaxation.
For some it is creative exploration.
For some it becomes contemplative or spiritual.
And for others it is simply unlike anything they have experienced before.
We don't need everyone to explain it the same way.
In fact, that individuality is part of what makes the Lucia so fascinating.
Where Science Meets Wonder
There is a temptation with unusual experiences to move toward one of two extremes.
We can reduce everything to biology and assume that understanding the mechanism means the experience has lost its meaning.
Or we can become so captivated by the mystery that we make claims the science cannot actually support.
At Awakening, we are interested in the space between those extremes.
We can acknowledge what neuroscience is beginning to reveal about visual processing, rhythmic stimulation, brain activity and altered states of consciousness.
And still remain curious.
Because knowing something about how your brain produces an extraordinary inner universe doesn't make that universe any less extraordinary.
If anything, it makes it more so.
Somewhere inside the electrical activity of the human nervous system exists the capacity to create astonishing worlds of color, movement, geometry and imagination.
Most of us simply never get the opportunity to watch it happen.
Lucia N°03 gives you that opportunity.
All you have to do is close your eyes.
Experience Lucia N°03 at Awakening Spokane
Lucia N°03 sessions at Awakening are guided experiences. Your Light Guide will help select a program and intensity appropriate for your comfort, curiosity and experience.
Because Lucia N°03 uses rapidly changing light, it is not appropriate for everyone. We review suitability before your first session and encourage every guest to experience the technology at their own pace.
Come curious.
You don't have to meditate correctly.
You don't have to believe anything.
You don't have to understand what happens.
Close your eyes. See more.
